UPDATE 10:00am PST. Basic Auth is now DISABLED for good. Please read the article below for details of how this affects you.

UPDATE: Today is the day. Basic Auth will be disabled at 8am PST today, 31st August. You MUST update to a recent version of TweetDeck in order to keep using your Twitter account after this time

A while ago we alerted you to the fact that Twitter was ceasing support for "Basic Authentication" in their API.

The current situation is this:

  • API rate limits are currently decreasing every day for those clients still using basic auth
  • On 31st August at 8am PST, basic auth will be turned off completely. At this time it will be impossible to access you Twitter account from a client that ONLY supports basic auth.

So, in order to continue using your Twitter account with TweetDeck from 31st August, you must be running at least the following versions, which all use xAuth:

Twitter have a page on their Developer Portal about the basic auth switchoff, which contains more details

TweetDeck for Desktop v0.34.3.2 is available now.

This version will not be automatically pushed to clients, but can be downloaded from http://www.tweetdeck.com/desktop or get the .air file direct from http://bit.ly/thedeck

The only changes in this release are as follows:

  • FIXED: Issue attempting to authorise access to Facebook pages (actually fixed in v0.34.3.1 as a support-distributed fix)
  • ADDED: Workaround to cope with the current bug in the Facebook API causing incorrect data & sorting in FB columns
  • IMPROVED: Performance optimisations when a Buzz column is added

Please note, this update is NOT part of the User Streams Preview, so do not install this update if you wish to remain on the User Streams version.

We will be rolling these changes into the User Streams Preview version of TweetDeck shortly and will push a new build to all testers at that point.
