Why won't TweetDeck let me update my new password for my Twitter account?

kimberly Oct 21, 2009

I know I have the right password because I just logged out of twitter after resetting the password... and now tweetdeck says it can't verify the details. I even totally went out of tweetdeck and back in! Aargh!

After some Googling and trial and error, it looks like TweetDeck for some reason is only recognizing the very first Twitter password that you ever entered - whether or not you uninstall and reinstall.  If you change your Twitter password (via Twitter) back to your original password (the password you first used when installing tweetdeck for the first time) and use that to log into Tweetdeck, you'll get it working again.  Not the best solution at all, especially if you changed your password for security reasons, but it's a temporary one until Tweetdeck corrects the issue.  Hope this helps.

You're right, that works--but it sure stinks for security!  I specifically changed my password today because two of my contacts were hacked and sending me accidental spam and I didn't want to be hacked too. <sigh>  Oh well, hopefully the TweetDeck team are aware of this...but it isn't in the "known issues" list...

I'm having the same issues, carolyn and nospammers.

And what if you can't remember the first password you used...then you're screwed, right?  Thought I knew it but it's still not working.

Same issue here.  I got hacked and changed my password...  So I'm no longer able to use my iPhone/Tweetdeck.  "Twitter Authorization Failed!"  Just quintuple-checked to make sure I am entering the correct info.  WACK.

This is utterly frustrating.  I had to change my password b/c my account got hacked.  Did that, and it works fine in Twitter.  Somehow, despite me logging out of Tweetdeck last time I used it, it automatically logged me in and showed my Facebook updates AND the suggested friends column for Twitter, but NOTHING for my own Twitter home column.  Couldn't get it to work.  Logged out, and went to log back in and it said my password is incorrect.  Went to settings after it let me in the old way and tried to change password.  It wouldn't accept it, said it was invalid.  Went to enter old password, said THAT was invalid, too!

Could it be more buggered up?  Methinks no.  This is so effing frustrating.  Please fix it already, Tweetdeck people.  Otherwise, I'm just getting rid of Tweetdeck.  Used to be great, now is total crap.

Exact same problem here. I had to change my password after being hacked. The new pwd works when I log on to Twitter via my browser. When I go into Tweetdeck, it won't allow me access with either the new or the old password. I have deleted the Tweetdeck app, restarted. Nothing works. Tweetdeck fails to verify Both the old and new passwords. And I am all out of strategies at this end. ACK.

SOLUTION FOR ME AT LEAST - I just went to try it again and realized I'd messed up putting in the password.  Deleting it I realized there were 4 or 5 times as many characters in the password field as i have in my password.  I went and deleted character after character until the cursor stopped.  Then I enter my password one more time and it worked perfectly.

ok twitter and tweetdeck are acting up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! let me go thru this problem step by step again>>>>ughhh.

1. first my account was hacked and i started received weird tweets about being seen on some site

2. i was advised to change my password by a fellow tweeter ( that i do know)

3. i attempted to change my passwrd per the directions given from tweetdeck support ( FAILED!!!!)

   a) i first changed the password in twitter then went to tweetdeck: settings> account> ( deleted old password , typed in new password, clicked verify( ahhh work details try again!!!) tried again, same result...( ok now im thinking maybe I'm typing it in wrong so i slowed down my typing *.......*.......*.......* ect) = result>>>> ahhh work details try again!

4. i log out of tweet deck and go back to twitter to check and see if the new password was accept ...and find that it was  accepted.... so i go back to tweetdeck and sign back in using the new password>>>> it lets me in but all my columns are still blank and the status read" not authorized"

5. i  click on settings, then account, and try to validate my new password AGAIN.... result>>>>ahhh work details try again!

6. i log back out on tweetdeck and decide to just use twitter until the tweetdeck ppl figure the mess out and guess what!!!!!!???? ugh!!!! I try to sign back into twitter and the damn thing tells me..... ACCOUNT BLOCKED DUE TO TOO MANY FAILED ATTEMPTS CHILLAX FOR A WHILE!!!!!!!!!!!! ...... now aint that some shyt for your ears!!!!  So not only can i NOT access my tweetdeck account ...i cant access my twitter account either!!!!!!!!!! So now im sitting here missing all my tweet pals..... :(

HEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPP TWEEEEEEEETDDDDDEEEEEECKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!

I'm having the same issue. Unfortunatly I decided to try deleting and reinstalling my twitter account in tweetdeck. Now it won't even reinstall with the original password. I'm tweeting for my company and this issue is really making it difficult.

OK there seems to be an issue with authentication of passwords through the Twitter API. We are working with Twitter to try to sort out where the problem lies.

In the meantime, the following should work:

- Log out of TweetDeck using the triangle Log Out button top right - Delete your ELS like this http://support.tweetdeck.com/forums/63876/entries/50622 << IMPORTANT BIT - Then go to twitter.com and login - Change your Twitter password - Then restart TweetDeck and log in with your new details

Thanks for this temporary workaround, Richard.  Is there a similar set of ELS instructions for the iPhone?

Just tried to do everything you said Richard and it did not work for me. I deleted my trash after emptying that ELS folder and everything. What do I do now?

I have the same problem- However when I

  1. Navigate from your Home directory to /Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR/ELS/
  2. You should then have a folder called TweetDeckFast.xxx (where xxx is a string of numbers and letters). Delete this folder.

There is no AIR/ELS and no tweetdeckfast. Is there a way to delete tweetdeck and reinstall it? Would that do it? Thank

Actually it did work afterall...Wish I could delete my comment above...

But to reiterate use the Forgot Password area even if you haven't forgotten your password. It worked for me!
